Hello and welcome back to the channel! Today, I am at the Blackout Bar in Fort William, upstairs in their extended area, which is currently closed. I am actually standing behind the bar with a pint of something pretty special - a Black Bar exclusive known as Nessmalle. This Belgian blonde comes in at 6.5% ABV and looks absolutely stunning.
Excuse the phone recording, as this was a spontaneous find while out for a beer. The beer has a beautiful golden, slightly hazy appearance, resembling a dark lemon drop with a thick, white head. The aroma is big and sweet, reminiscent of a sweet shop with a distinct Belgian yeast style.
Upon tasting, the beer delivers a rich, boozy, toasted caramel flavour that is characteristic of an authentic Belgian beer. While it may lack the intense yeastiness of some Belgian styles, it makes up for it with its sweet, sherbety goodness. The beer is a treat for the senses.
Tasting Notes
On the palate, the beer starts with a burst of sugary lemon sherbets, followed by herbal and rustic Belgian notes. As you continue to sip, the beer reveals a boozy warmth with hints of citrus fruit like lemon and dark raspberries. The sweetness is present throughout, balanced by a candy-like sugary finish.
The aftertaste lingers with sweet lemon notes and a rich maltiness, reminiscent of digestive biscuits. Overall, the beer is decadent yet approachable, showcasing a depth of flavour that is both satisfying and flavourful.
Bar Tour
We are currently behind the bar at the Blackout Bar, soaking in the ambiance of this charming establishment. The ceilings are beautifully ornate, reflecting the building's history as an old church. The artwork and decor are tastefully done, adding to the overall charm of the place.
Despite the bar being temporarily closed, the space exudes a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The attention to detail in the design and layout of the bar is evident, making it a delightful place to enjoy a drink or meal.
