The IPA, or India Pale Ale, is a popular beer style that originated in England in the 19th century. In its early days, IPA was a beer that was brewed to be shipped to the British colonies in India. The beers had to withstand the long sea journey, and so the IPA style was characterised by a high alcohol content and a strong bitterness. This combination helped preserve the beer and prevent spoilage during transit.
In recent years, the IPA style has gained popularity in America, and there are now two distinct variations: the West Coast IPA and the East Coast IPA. While both styles are still IPA's, they have some noticeable differences.
The West Coast IPA is characterised by a clear, golden colour and a strong, bitter flavour. This style is typically made with a high hop content, which gives it a piney, resinous aroma. The bitterness of the West Coast IPA is often balanced by a hint of sweetness from the stone fruit flavours.
The East Coast IPA, on the other hand, is usually much hazier and has a yellowy-custard colour. This style is characterised by a juicier, fruitier flavour profile and a lower bitterness. The New England IPA, which is a variation of the East Coast IPA, is often described as having a more hazy appearance and a very juicy flavour profile.
So, what is the difference between these two styles of IPA's? The main difference lies in the hops used in brewing the beer. The West Coast IPA is usually brewed with hops that have a more piney, resinous flavour, while the East Coast IPA is brewed with hops that have a fruitier, juicier flavour profile.
Another factor that sets the two styles apart is the level of bitterness. The West Coast IPA is known for its strong bitterness, while the East Coast IPA is known for its lower bitterness and fruitier flavour profile. This is why the West Coast IPA is often described as being more balanced and easy-going, while the East Coast IPA is often described as being more juicy and flavorful.
So, which one is right for you? That depends on your personal taste preferences. If you enjoy a strong, bitter flavour, then the West Coast IPA is probably the right choice for you. If you prefer a fruitier, juicier flavour profile, then the East Coast IPA is probably the right choice.
Regardless of which style you choose, it's important to remember that the IPA is a versatile beer style that can be enjoyed by everyone. Whether you prefer the strong bitterness of the West Coast IPA or the juicy flavour of the East Coast IPA, there's an IPA out there for everyone.
